Keto Pina Colada
Pina coladas used to be my all time favorite drink to get while on a cruise (they always got me with those cute pineapple and coconut cups!). They were also my go-to’s for sipping pool at back yard barbecues. Prior to going keto that is!
Now that Faith has whipped up this low carb pina colada, I can once again sit pool side and sip on a pina colada…and stay in ketosis!
What Does Pina Colada Mean?
The phrase pina colada literally means strained pineapple. It is said to be a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice that’s used when making a signature pina colada.
The drink was originated in Puerto Rico by a pirate Roberto Cofresí. He created the recipe as something to help boost his crew’s morale. This was what would be later known as the famous piña colada.
With his death in 1825, the recipe for the piña colada was lost. Historian Haydée Reichard disputes this version of the story. In 1978 Puerto Rico proclaimed the cocktail its official drink. They now celebrate national pina colada day every year on July 10th.
Does this Pina Colada Recipe Have Alchohol In It?
Nope! This keto-friendly pina colada recipe is alcohol-free. Meaning you can even let the kids have some too! With how good this recipe is, you won’t even miss the alcohol.
Pro Tip: Since rum is a low carb alcohol, you could add some to this recipe and still keep it keto-friendly. For every 1 serving of this keto pina colada, you can add 1-2 ounces of the rum. Please drink responsibly.
Ingredients You’ll Need For A Keto Pina Colada Recipe
You don’t need much for this pina colada. Just grab a few of your keto staple ingredients, some fresh fruit, and coconut flavorings to round out this tropical drink recipe.
- Chopped fresh pineapple
- Canned unsweetened full-fat coconut milk
- Milled golden flaxseed
- Vanilla extract
- Coconut extract
- Sea salt
- Liquid stevia
- Ice cubes
How To Make a Keto Pina Colada Without Alcohol
This cocktail is best when made with a blender. Although it can also be made shaken in a cocktail shaker with some ice. We love the frosted, slushy drink that comes from blending it with ice though.
First, grab your blender. Next, you’ll add the pineapple, coconut milk, milled golden flaxseed, vanilla extract, coconut extract, salt, and stevia to a blender. Next, process until smooth.
After that, add the ice cubes and pulse until thick and creamy, tamping down as necessary. Lastly, pour the mixture into a glass and serve immediately.
Do I Have To Make A Pina Colada Frozen?
No, you don’t! This recipe can also be made as a shaken version instead of frozen in a blender. You will just need a cocktail shaker instead of a blender and you will be good to go!
You will simply add all your ingredients into the shaker, shake until well blended, and serve. It’s just that easy, and so delicious!
Can I Make More Than One Keto Pina Colada at a Time?
Yes, you can. If you want to double, triple or quadruple the recipe you definitely can. No need to make just one at a time. You can add enough ingredients for however many you want into the blender, then separate into single serving glasses.
Just be sure not to fill the blender too full. If there’s not enough room for everything to move around enough the ingredients will not be able to blend properly.
Tips For Serving Pina Coladas
This is a great drink to serve for party guests, even if they aren’t on a low carb diet. It tastes just the original, so no one will even know its a healthier version.
You if you make this in bulk, as directed above, you can serve it out at a party with your friends. Just pour it in a cute pitcher, or have separated drinks all ready to go for when everyone arrives.
Don’t forget to garnish with a slice of pineapple and a cherry to really complete the look!
